In 1991 Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre (OPSMC) initiated an annual lecture in recognition of the work undertaken by Australian sports medicine professionals.
Each year OPSMC invite a distinguished Australian working in the field of sports or musculoskeletal medicine to deliver this lecture. The recipient is someone recognised by his or her peers as having made a significant contribution either through research, clinical work or a combination of the two. The lecture is known as the Annual FC Better Lecture in recognition of the late Dr Fred Better’s contribution to sports medicine. Dr Better single handedly created a medical speciality in this country by initiating a sports medicine course for GPs, the first sports medicine centre in Victoria and taking on the role of National President of the Australian Sports Medicine Federation. Dr Better is known as the ‘Father of Sport Medicine’ due to his commitment to learning, hard work, leadership and dedication to sports medicine. The Annual FC Better Lecture is aimed at a multidisciplinary audience bringing together 200-300 practitioners including Sports Physicians, Physiotherapists, Myotherapists, Podiatrists and Soft Tissue Therapists.
