Leading Australian sports physician, Dr Peter Brukner has been appointed Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science at the Liverpool Football Club.
Dr Brukner is the current Socceroos team doctor and a founding partner at Australia’s largest sports medicine clinic, the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne.
The appointment followed a global search by Liverpool and shows that Australian sports medicine is held in high regard.
“This is an exciting challenge,” Dr Brukner said. “I will be visiting Liverpool over the next few weeks and learning more about the club, prior to returning to Australia then traveling to South Africa with the Socceroos for the World Cup,”
Dr Brukner previously had been club doctor with Australian Football League (AFL) clubs Melbourne and Collingwood, and had looked after various Australian national teams including swimming, athletics and hockey. He has been Australian team doctor at Olympic and Commonwealth Games, as well as numerous World Championships. He is the co-author of the best selling sports medicine textbook, Clinical Sports Medicine.
Dr Brukner will maintain his involvement in Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre through regular visits home, although he will relinquish some other roles.
“I will miss my role as a board member of Hockey Australia as well as my involvement in local sporting clubs TEM hockey and University Blues football,” Dr Brukner said.
“I will also miss my media work of the past few years as a medical boundary rider for ABC Grandstand football, as well as with The Age and SEN radio.”
Dr Brukner will remain a board member of Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre and continue to work with the professional staff at OPSMC, who provide top class support to Australian sportsmen and women.
