GymnasticsWhat is pilates?

Pilates is an exercise regime using specific floor based exercises and spring resisted equipment to train the body's deep postural muscles. Key areas trained are the deep abdominal and lower back muscles, deep pelvic and hip muscles, and the upper and middle back muscles.

The purpose of training these muscles is to provide stability, strength and control to the lower back, pelvic and hip joints, upper back, neck and shoulder regions.

Clinical pilates is an adaptation of the original pilates techniques. It is instructed on a one to one basis by a qualified physiotherapist with post graduate training in pilates. Clinical pilates has a strong emphasis on accurate diagnosis and treatment of pain and injury, as well as optimal postural alignment and biomechanics.

Following an initial assessment of any injury/pain or postural problems present, the clinical pilates instructor builds an individualised program tailored according to assessment findings as well as to particular sports or activities if appropriate.
