Sports Physicians: Sports Physicians are doctors with specialist training in sports injuries and illnesses. They are often the first point of contact to the sports medicine team: - assessing and diagnosing injuries or illness
- devising and co-ordinating a treatment program
- managing medical problems e.g. asthma, heart disease
- assisting adolescents and younger people.
How we can help you: The Sports Physicians at Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre are trained to make the appropriate diagnosis, and just as importantly, detect the causes or risk factors that lead to the development of the condition. As doctors we can access all the appropriate investigations from x-rays to blood tests to complex scans. Once the diagnosis is made we can advise on treatment and arrange for the appropriate referrals. This may involve the prescription of medications, injection of joints and advice on activity and exercise that can be safely undertaken. Whilst much of our work involves musculoskeletal problems, we are also specifically trained to manage medical problems that can be affected by exercise including diabetes, asthma and cardiovascular disease. Our training and experience also enables you to deal with general practice issues, often from the perspective of the active person. Vaccinations and travel advice can also be arranged. A referral is not required to see a sports physician. Sports Physician Registrars All our registrars are accredited trainees of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians having completed their medical training and hospital based training. The registrars train under supervision of Fellows of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians for four years. |
