Dr Tim Barbour

M
Sport & Exercise Physician
|
Melbourne Campus
MBBS, FACSEP, MSM(Res)

Bio

After three years in General Practice, Tim moved to Melbourne to pursue his interest in Sports Medicine. Participating in the Australasian College of Sports Physicians training program, Tim has been working full-time in this field for the last 18 years and achieved Fellowship of the ACSP in 2004.

Given his competitive involvement in both Track and Field and Australian Rules Football, Tim has a broad understanding of injuries concerned with these sports. Further research has been undertaken in the study of lower limb compartment syndrome, a common condition seen in runners. This extended to the completion in 2006 of a Masters Degree with the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine (CHESM) at the University of Melbourne.

Tim was Chief Medical Officer to Athletics Australia from 2003 until 2008, being Team Doctor to National Teams for two Olympic campaigns, two World Championships and the Melbourne Commonwealth Games. During his tenure he also served on the Athletics Australia Anti Doping Commission.  Many professional highlights occurred during his time with Athletics Australia, especially seeing athletes reach and exceed their sporting potential on the world stage.

In 2008 he became Medical Officer to the St Kilda Football Club, a position he continues in currently (and striving to build towards further final campaigns soon!).

Tim enjoys consulting with members of the public who wish to pursue their recreational sporting endeavours, working towards establishing a firm diagnosis and management plan for all manner of injury types. He recognises the importance of maintaining an exercise program for both physical and psychological benefits.

Tim enjoys interacting with his colleagues in the multidisciplinary setting that OPSMC offers, along with contributing towards the supervision and education of the clinic’s registrars.

Tim Barbour practices at OPSMC’s Olympic Park Campus.
